War nickel in my change today!
2 Attachment(s)
I'm currently on the road for work and staying in San Pedro, CA. For dinner tonight, I walked over to the Hawaian bbq joint for some good Kalua pork. I had ten cents and a couple bucks paper change coming and was pleasantly surprised when the girl gave me two nickels (instead of a dime). Like others here, I hold on to the nickels I get since they are/were worth more than face value in metal content.
As I'm walking down the hotel hallway back to my room, I hear a distinct, high pitched clinking metal sound. I look back to see what the noise is when I realize it's the two nickels in my pocket. I get to my room and check out the coins, and one of them is a 1945. After a quick ring test and internet search I confirmed I had a war nickel. Even better, it was struck in Denver which had the lowest mintage that year! :applause_ I think it's been about three years or so since I got any silver in change, the last time being a silver dime. |

Re: War nickel in my change today!
Good find. I have not gotten silver in my change in almost 2 years. Last was a silver dime and quarter. I love it when you get some real money in your change.

Re: War nickel in my change today!
It's just beginning, in my opinion. The wife works part time in a busy grocery store and is seeing more and more (pre-83 cents) older coins appearing.
All those folks with big coin jars are cashing them in. Now is a good time to know a bank teller. Sign of the times to come. |
Re: War nickel in my change today!
All I got was a couple of pre-82 pennies....:banghead:

Re: War nickel in my change today!
Last week I got a British 5 Pence coin, instead of a dime, in my change from somewhere??
I only noticed because I was trying to remove a small screw on a item at work, and had no screwdriver close by. Reached for a handy dime instead, or so I thought. It's a tiny bit wider than a dime though. So if a British Pound is twice what a dollar is worth, does that mean a Pence is double what a penny is worth? If so, it's worth about 10 cents. lol |
Re: War nickel in my change today!
I snagged one of those in my change a few weeks ago.:bull-buddy-icon:
It was the first silver I had ever gotten in change. OK maybe not the first ever, but the first since I became aware that our currency once contained precious metals. Mine was a 1943 with a P mint mark. |
